Summer Fun in Cooperstown & Otsego County
Baseball, long days on the lake, and an ice-cold drink in hand. Warm weather in Central New York is your invitation to get outside, slow down, and let the kids run themselves tired. From historic farms to opera under the stars to a one-hour cruise on Otsego Lake, summer in Otsego County does not mess around. Don't sleep on the Great Outdoors here — this corner of New York is greener, quieter, and more beautiful than your group chat is prepared for.
When you plan your visit, work these into the itinerary.
Fenimore Farm & Country Village American history doesn't just sit behind glass at Fenimore Farm & Country Village — it gets out, does its chores, and trades goods at the Village Crossroad. One of the country's oldest living history museums, Fenimore Farm recreates rural New York circa 1845 with a working farm, costumed interpreters, craft demonstrations, and hands-on activities that make the past feel less like homework and more like a really good day out.
Brewery Ommegang Taste what's on tap. Brewery Ommegang brews eight Belgian-style ales year-round plus a rotating cast of seasonals and specialty releases, and its summer concert series brings national headliners to a stage flanked by hop fields. Stop by the tasting room and gift shop after a tour, catch a show, or skip both and hit the disc golf course for Birdies & Beers — Ommegang's weekly summer league where the only handicap is your fourth pint.
Glimmerglass Queen The Glimmerglass Queen is a 50-foot narrated excursion boat that runs one-hour tours of Otsego Lake from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. The captain points out the Otesaga, the Kingfisher Tower, and the lakeside landmarks that James Fenimore Cooper wrote into American literature — which is a polite way of saying you'll learn a lot without trying. Bring cash. Bring a camera.
Glimmerglass State Park, Gilbert Lake State Park & Paddling the Susquehanna Glimmerglass State Park sits at the north end of Otsego Lake with swimming, hiking, and one of the most photogenic covered bridges in the state (hi, Hyde Hall). About 30 minutes southwest, Gilbert Lake State Park brings a quieter pace — a small lake, easy trails, cabins, and a beach for under-the-radar lake days. For paddlers, Canoe & Kayak Rentals and Sales (based in Portlandville, halfway between Cooperstown and Oneonta) puts you on the water with everything you need. Their Susquehanna River trips are the move — the river is gentle, scenic, and starts right here in Otsego County. Yes, this is the actual source of the Susquehanna. Yes, you should brag about it.
Barnyard Swing Mini Golf & Family Fun Center Eighteen holes of mini golf wrapped around an 1850s dairy barn, plus a soft-serve dairy bar, gem panning, a digital ball wall, and enough random fun to settle "what are we doing tonight?" for everyone in your group. Barnyard Swing reopens for the 2026 season on Mother's Day weekend — exactly when you'll need it.
The Glimmerglass Festival World-class opera, eight miles north of Cooperstown, on the shore of Otsego Lake. The Glimmerglass Festival runs July 10 – August 17, 2026 at the Alice Busch Opera Theater, and the 2026 lineup includes Oklahoma!, Madame Butterfly, Mozart's Così, and Fellow Travelers, plus the youth opera Robin Hood. Show up early for lawn picnics, pre-show talks, and the kind of sunset you'd otherwise have to drive much farther to see.
Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad A scenic 16-mile vintage train ride out of Milford that crosses the Susquehanna River twice on steel-truss bridges and rolls through forests, wetlands, and working farms on tracks first laid in 1869. Beyond the regular scenic excursions, the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad runs themed rides all season — Blues Express, Train Robberies, dinner trains, the Easter Bunny Express, and a full slate of fall and holiday specials. It's nostalgic without being precious about it.
