Otsego County doesn't get nearly enough credit for its winter fishing. While the rest of the world is watching football or doomscrolling vacation ads, a quiet crew of anglers has already figured out that this stretch of Central New York is one of the most diverse and accessible ice fishing regions in the state.
Trophy lake trout, fat walleye, panfish galore — it's all out there, frozen in place, waiting. Here are the top spots, sourced from NYSDEC data and hard-earned local knowledge.
Otsego Lake
Crown JewelKnown to literary types as "Glimmerglass" and to ice anglers as the region's finest fishery, Otsego Lake is the flagship water body of Cooperstown — and one of the few lakes in Central New York with a genuine lake trout population. Multiple access points make it one of the most angler-friendly lakes in the area.
Canadarago Lake
Sleeper HitCanadarago doesn't get the name recognition of its famous neighbor, but serious ice anglers know the score. Shallower than Otsego, it typically freezes earlier and holds good ice longer. The walleye and tiger muskie fishery here is legitimately excellent — and the crowds haven't caught on yet.
Arnold Lake
Trout SpecialistLocated in the Town of Hartwick, Arnold Lake punches above its size class with a healthy trout fishery and easy access. A solid pick for anglers who want a more intimate experience without navigating a large, open lake.
Gilbert Lake
Family-FriendlySet inside Gilbert Lake State Park in the Town of Laurens, this is your scenic, well-maintained option — ideal for families or anyone who appreciates having facilities nearby. The trout fishing is reliable and the setting is worth the drive on its own.
Goodyear Lake
River CharacterA reservoir on the Susquehanna River near Milford, Goodyear offers a different fishing dynamic than the inland lakes. Its riverine character means a different species mix and different ice behavior — always check conditions carefully here.
Basswood Pond
Off the Beaten PathFor anglers who like their fishing spots genuinely quiet, Basswood Pond in Burlington is worth the effort. Located in Basswood Pond State Forest, it offers the kind of solitude that's increasingly hard to find — especially in a county this good at keeping secrets.
Wilber Lake
Near OneontaConveniently located near Oneonta, Wilber Lake is a solid warm-water fishery with reliable species diversity and two points of easy access. Great option if you're coming from the south or want a quick half-day trip.
Susquehanna River — Crumhorn Access
For the OverachieversRiver ice fishing isn't for the faint of heart — conditions change fast and checking ice thickness is non-negotiable. But if you know what you're doing, the Crumhorn Fishing Access Site on the Susquehanna River gives you a legitimate shot at muskie, northern pike, and walleye. High risk, high reward.
Before You Go

- Winter Access Not all parking areas and roads are maintained in winter. Contact the NYSDEC Region 4 Fisheries Office for current conditions.
