A Note From Our Team

My son has Celiac disease, and figuring out where he can eat around here stopped being a chore a long time ago and turned into something closer to a hobby. This list is the real one we use — not a roundup of every place that checked a box on a website.

I know which servers ask the right questions before I even bring it up. I know which fryers are dedicated and which ones I just don't risk. I know that "gluten-free" on a menu can mean wildly different things depending on the kitchen, and I've done enough trial and error in this county to save you some of it.

This isn't a list of every restaurant that claims to be gluten-free. It's the actual spots we trust, split between Oneonta and Cooperstown, because you're going to spend time in both — whether you're here for a tournament weekend, the Hall of Fame, or just a long weekend exploring the lake.

Before You Go

Gluten-free doesn't always mean dedicated. Some of these spots have separate fryers and prep areas; others offer GF substitutions made in a shared kitchen. Always ask about cross-contamination directly with your server — shared pasta water, shared fryer oil, and shared prep surfaces are the details that matter most if you're dealing with Celiac specifically, not just a gluten sensitivity. Every place below is one we trust, but "trust" still means asking the question every time.

Oneonta

Gluten-free French toast at Social Eats Project, Oneonta NY

Social Eats Project

One of our favorites, full stop. GF pancakes, GF French Toast, GF burger buns, GF bread — the works. They're also genuinely team-friendly and can put together party platters and private parties with enough advance notice, which matters if you're feeding a dugout's worth of kids. On the flip side, this is our go to spot for a special brunch with the dude, and it certainly helps they have a killer cocktail and mocktail menu for us.

Sal's Oneonta

Right on Main Street, with fantastic GF pizza and — I'm not exaggerating — the best fresh GF ravioli my son has ever had. Anywhere. Worth the trip on its own.

Local's Secret

Everyone assumes Italian food is the hardest cuisine to do gluten-free well. Sal's GF ravioli is the dish that proves them wrong, and most visitors never even ask if it exists.

Brooks House of BBQ

Famous around here for their chicken, and they offer a special GF BBQ chicken option that lives up to the reputation. Also genuinely team-friendly if you're feeding a group.

The Autumn Cafe

Downtown, with solid GF options — including GF rolls, which is rarer than it should be.

Soda Jerks at Action Lube

Near Cooperstown All Star Village, with a dedicated GF fryer. Yes, it's an old-fashioned diner attached to an auto repair shop. No, that's not a typo. Just go with it — it works, and the dedicated fryer means less guessing for you.

Freestyle Cafe

On Route 28 on your way into Cooperstown, with GF bread for sandwiches and a genuinely fun gift shop to browse while you wait.

Groceries & Snacks in Oneonta

Price Chopper has the best dedicated GF section we've found in the area. Aldi is always our reliable go-to. And Green Earth Natural Food Store, just off Main Street and locally owned, rounds out the trio — that's our actual rotation. Yes, of course Walmart carries GF items too, but between Price Chopper and Aldi, we rarely need it.

Cooperstown

The Hawkeye Bar & Grill at the Otesaga

A genuinely strong range of GF options — more than you'd expect from a hotel restaurant, and worth knowing about if you're staying in the village.

Stagecoach Coffee

On Pioneer Street, always has GF sweets in the case and GF bread for sandwiches. Coffee here is non-negotiable — get it regardless of anything else on this list.

Bocca Osteria

Offers GF crusts and pasta, but ask specifically about dedicated pasta water before you order — that's the detail that makes or breaks an Italian spot for Celiac diners.

Toscana

Genuinely gluten-free savvy across salads and pasta. As with anywhere, ask the questions — but this is a kitchen that's clearly thought about it.

Doubleday Cafe

A wide range of GF options, including GF buns for their classic burgers — a small detail that makes a big difference when everyone else at the table is having a burger too.

Upstate Bar & Grill

A go-to for steak and salmon — just let them know ahead, as always. This spot is extremely team and group friendly; it's basically built for tournament season.

Local's Secret

Upstate Bar & Grill in July is basically one giant celebration of youth baseball. If you want a quieter night, go earlier in the evening or earlier in the season.

Origins Cafe

The original farm-to-table spot in town — locally sourced, locally grown, and genuinely thoughtful about GF options. It's a more relaxed vibe than a lot of the team-friendly spots above, and not really built for large groups, but it's one of our favorites for a quieter night out any time of year.

Groceries in Cooperstown

The Cooperstown Natural Food Store has great GF snacks, cereal, and even GF pizza shells if you're in an Airbnb and want to make that there. There IS a small Price Chopper in the village, but it doesn't have a dedicated GF section, so you'll spend more time hunting than shopping. Since it's the only grocery store in the village, my honest advice is to stock up using the Oneonta list above before you settle in — you'll save yourself a trip and a ton of stress.
