Cyclists from Otsego County and the surrounding region will take part in "Ride On" for Complete Streets.
The event is a multi-distance bicycle ride being planned in the Richfield Springs area. The ride is for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. Road cyclists will embark on their choice of 62, 32, 21, 13, or a 3-mile ride. These routes have been designed to appeal to everyone from the beginner rider to the avid, seasoned cyclist. The 21-mile ride is a "gravel grinder". All rides will start and finish at the Richfield Springs Central School.
A Complete Streets Policy should be part of every community's plan to reduce its carbon footprint, promote healthy lifestyles, and therefore support its citizens in living longer, happier, and healthier lives. As seen on the Smart Growth America website, and stated so clearly, "A Complete Streets approach integrates people and place in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of our transportation networks. This helps to ensure streets are safe for people of all ages and abilities, balance the needs of different modes, and support local land uses, economies, cultures, and natural environments."
The Otsego Regional Cycling Advocates (ORCA), a committee of Otsego Outdoors - sponsored by Otsego 2000, is joining forces with the NY State Department of Health's 'Creating Healthy Schools and Communities', and the Rural Health Education Network of Schoharie, Otsego, & Montgomery Counties (RHENSOM) to support Complete Streets efforts in Otsego County and specifically, at this time, with the Richfield Springs community.
