Multi-Day Celebration to Feature Exclusive New York and German Beers, Stein Holding Contests, DJs Spinning Bavarian Music, "Beer School" and a Dachshund and Pup Parade
Red Shed Brewery, Cooperstown, New York's only craft farm brewery in the area, will host the area's first multi-day Oktoberfest celebration, Sept 21 through Sept. 23.
True to their mission of "Local, Handcrafted, Fresh" – Red Shed Brewery will feature a traditional German celebration with NY flair. Festivities begin on Friday, Sept. 21 with a DJ spinning traditional Bavarian music, DJs, beer and brats starting at 4 p.m. Red Shed will kick off festivities with an Oktoberfest beer celebration, with the highlight being on their 20 beer taps. The popular brewery will feature flights of their own Oktoberfest Beer, made from 100 percent NY hops, as well as a unique collection of German-style beers from NY state farm brewers around the state.
The next day – Saturday, Sept 22 at noon – the brewhouse staff will host "Beer School" which will feature how beer is made, showcasing techniques for craft NY farm brewing and ingredients. The session will include a beer tasting and a German-style lunch. Space is limited; pre-registration is encouraged. Click here for "Beer School" tickets via Eventbrite.
By 3 p.m. on Saturday, Red Shed Brewery will feature the Cooperstown area's first and only Stein Holding competition. Also known as Masskrugstemmen, this is the Bavarian feat of strength and endurance where contestants hold a 1-liter stein of "bier" (the equivalent of five pounds) out in front of them at shoulder level for as long as they can. The bier cannot be spilled, and elbows must remain straight with extended arms kept parallel to the ground. The winner is whoever can keep the stein aloft the longest. There will be Women's and Men's Divisions with the winner of each division winning a Red Shed themed prize.
By sunset, guests will enjoy the sunset over New York's rolling hills, while enjoying a fresh brew and traditional German fare. At 8 p.m., Becca Frame and the Tall Boys take the live music stage to rock out the rest of the night.
Sunday festivities will continue with an additional Beer School session starting at noon. At 1:30 p.m., all dogs are welcome to Walter's Dachshund and Pup Parade. Guests may bring their pups to enjoy the traditional music and show off their own German or other costumes.
Lederhosen and Dirndls are encouraged to be worn throughout the festival. This event is family-friendly and open to guests of all ages.
