Forget the peanuts and Cracker Jack, it's the thriving craft beverage and dining scene that will make you want to come back!
Cooperstown and Otsego County was once the capital of U.S. hops production, producing three million pounds of hops annually. Today, six local breweries—as well as wineries, cider mills, and a distillery—fuel the region's rich beverage scene.
Among the most well-known of these is Brewery Ommegang. When it was built on a 136-acre farm, just minutes from downtown Cooperstown in 1997, Ommegang became the first new farmstead brewery in the U.S. in more than 100 years. Today, it specializes in Belgian-style ales, including the exclusive Game of Thrones® series – and offers tours, authentic Flemish cuisine, and a summer concert series. While you are in the area, Ommegang's neighbor, the Red Shed Brewery Taproom, is just a half mile away and features guest taps from across New York State in addition to their own brews which are made with 100% NYS ingredients. Both Brewery Ommegang and Red Shed host evening events, such as bon fires and trivia, throughout all 4 seasons, making them a great spot to end the night even in the colder months. The best way to get a taste of the region, however, is along the Cooperstown Beverage Trail. Running 37 miles through Otsego County and central New York, the trail offers tastings at several breweries, wineries, a cidery, and a distillery.
Shorten your search with an all-in-one visit to the Cooperstown Farmers' Market on Saturdays year-round—and Tuesday afternoons in summer— to discover local beverages as well as fresh locally-sourced foods.
