Beyond the art of the game, Otsego County is home to big culture in a small-town setting. Here, museums and galleries, sculpture trails and vintage trains—as well as two different opera experiences—nestle among the Catskill Mountain foothills.
Art Meets History
On the one hand, there's the Fenimore Art Museum, home to one of the nation's most eclectic collections of American Indian Art as well as American Folk Art—all set in a neo-Georgian style mansion at the shore of Otsego Lake. On the other hand, find the rustic Farmers' Museum, with its exhibitions of more than 23,000 farm tools and artifacts, and a hops trail tour that reveals the art and history of brewing. In between, galleries such as The Art Garage and Bobby Sharp Glassworks feature diverse exhibits, classes and programming. Outside of Cooperstown, in the small communities of Cherry Valley and Gilbertsville, sculpture trails showcase dozens of pieces crafted by local and international artists.
From historic farms to early 19th century mansions, Cooperstown and Otsego County also offer a peek into the American past. The 50-room Hyde Hall mansion, built in the early 1800s, is among the nation's finest examples of neoclassical architecture. Its grounds are also home to the Nation's oldest wooden covered bridge.
Railfans can explore the historic American, four-wheel Little Red Caboose in Oneonta, then tour the Susquehanna River Valley aboard the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad that travels from Milford to Cooperstown.
Festivals and Events
From opera scenes to the silver screen, Otsego County is home to dozens of seasonal festivals and exhibits. Come summer, librettos ring across Otsego Lake with the arrival of the Glimmerglass Festival at the Alice Busch Opera Theater, which runs July through August. The Cooperstown Summer Music Festival presents concerts from award-winning classical musicians at a range of venues, including The Otesaga Resort Hotel and Hyde Hall. The Foothills Performing Arts Center in Oneonta features performances by artists like Mary Chapin Carpenter and Amy Schumer, as well as live showings of The Metropolitan Opera. In early November, Glimmerglass Film Days showcase documentaries, indie films, and conversations with award-winning filmmakers.
