An Agri/Cuisine Adventure

Agriculture and food play a major role in enjoying our area - here are some ideas!

Begin your day at the Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard with a piping hot cup of coffee or cider and a hearty cider donut. Peruse the Cider Mill's great inventory of unique gifts, hard cider, apple wines, NYS sharp cheeses and more than 40 sampling of salsas, spreads, and specialty foods. Cider Mill Bill and his staff look forward to seeing you when they open at 9 am! Don't forget to feed the ducks!

By mid-morning, it's back in the car for the short trip back to The Farmers' Museum, an intimate living history museum with a purposeful village and working farm - including a Bomb Proof Cow, should you care to try.! Although work on the farm and in the village was tough during the mid-1800s, folks had time for fun - as you will see at the Country Fair and its new Carousel.

Ah, by now it's time for lunch, which you can enjoy at the Herder's Cottage at The Farmers' Museum, or take the quick trip back into Cooperstown for your choice of cafes and eateries on Main Street. For a hearty buffet luncheon overlooking Otsego Lake, don't miss the Otesaga Resort Hotel - a meal with a view.

Next on your trip is a tour of Brewery Ommegang, the first farmstead brewery built in America in 100 years. Located on a former hops farm, Ommegang brews five distinct Belgian-style ales - you can learn how they make the bottle-aged beer and take a sip or two! The Gift Shop is for the Chocolate Lover. There's lots more, but you love Chocolate, you're in heaven, talk nothing about the great beer!

For a completely different brewery, take a spin a bit down the road to Cooperstown Brewing Company, an English-style brewery with beers like Bench Warmer, Old Slugger - this brewery has made the beer-baseball connection. The brewery offers tours, samples and has a gift shop.

Then travel south along the Susquehanna River on Route 28 until you arrive at Bear Pond Winery, a small and relatively "young" NYS Farm Winery. Established in 1992 near the shores of Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, this winery moved to its new location in 1999, half-way between the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and the Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta. The grapes used in the Bear Pond process are from New York State. The winery includes an exhibit, tours, and tastes, along with a gift shop.

From mid-Spring through the Harvest Season, you'll find Farmers Markets in Cooperstown, Oneonta, and Richfield Springs - and roadside stands galore! Happy eating!
