Fans Enjoy Timeless Baseball Traditions at Start of Hall of Fame Classic Weekend

June 19, 2010 - Family Catch, Youth Skills Clinic and Voices of the Game Program Entertain Audiences on Day Before Second Annual Hall of Fame Classic

COOPERSTOWN, NY - On Sunday, some of the greatest players the game has known will thrill fans at the Hall of Fame Classic in Cooperstown.

But on Saturday, many of those same fans got to experience the thrill of Doubleday Field for themselves - and hear behind-the-scenes ballpark stories from Hall of Famers and former major leaguers.

The day before Father's Day featured several family-friendly events in Cooperstown as the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum hosted Hall of Fame Classic Weekend. The weekend culminates with Sunday's Hall of Fame Classic, featuring Hall of Famers Gary Carter, Bob Feller, Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage, Harmon Killebrew, Phil Niekro and Ozzie Smith along with former major leaguers like Kevin Bass, Paul Blair, Brian Boehringer, Fred Cambria, Bert Campaneris, John Doherty, Dave Fleming, Steve Grilli, Jim Hannan, Jeff Kent, Tim Leary, Bill Madlock, Mike Pagliarulo, Dennis Rasmussen, Tony Saunders, Rich Surhoff, Jon Warden and Mark Whiten.

Limited tickets remain for Sunday's 2 p.m. Hall of Fame Classic in Cooperstown. Fans can purchase seats to the seven-inning legends game at Doubleday Field on Sunday starting at 9 a.m. at Doubleday Field. Tickets are $12.50 for first and third base seats and $11 for outfield seats.

The Family Catch opened the weekend events at Doubleday Field as hundreds of parents and children enjoyed sunshine and blue skies while tossing balls around the outfield at the home of baseball. Later Saturday, Doubleday Field played host to more than 200 kids at the Youth Skills Clinic as former major leaguers Blair, Cambria, Doherty, Grilli, Hannan, Rasmussen, Saunders, Surhoff, Warden and Whiten provided tips and hand-on instruction to their students.

On Saturday evening, the seven Hall of Famers who will appear at Sunday's Hall of Fame Classic gathered for a Voices of the Game event at Cooperstown High School, sharing stories about the big leagues with more than 500 fans.

The Cooperstown Game Day Parade will open Sunday's Hall of Fame Classic festivities at noon. The Main Street parade, presented by the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, the Village of Cooperstown and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, will feature musical units, a color guard and honorary and sponsor representatives as well the Hall of Famers and the other former major leaguers participating in Sunday's Hall of Fame Classic.

Following parade, the Legends Hitting Contest at Doubleday Field will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the Hall of Fame Classic at 2 p.m.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Museum is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. seven days a week.
