Baseball Hall of Fame Gets Ready to CelebrateAugust 4, 2009 - Hall to celebrate 100th anniversary of Wagner card COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. - In all of baseball history, there has only been one Honus Wagner. On Thursday, Aug. 6, though, visitors to the Baseball Hall of Fame will be seeing double -- the Museum will display its Wagner T206 baseball cards together for the first time. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum hosts a 100th Anniversary Salute to the T206 Honus Wagner Card as part of the Museum's Baseball Wisdom Series. The program will feature the display of the Museum's two T206 Wagner cards, which are recognized as some of the most famous cards in the history of collecting. Wagner, who played with the Louisville Colonels and Pittsburgh Pirates from 1897-1917, was a member of the first Hall of Fame class in 1936. By the time the T206 series appeared in 1909, Wagner was one of baseball's biggest stars. Special programs honoring the T206 Wagner card will be held throughout the day, and all are included with Museum admission. Programs include:
In addition, Museum visitors will be eligible for:
The Honus Wagner T206 card has become the most famous baseball card in the world. The T206 set consisted of more than 500 cards featuring Major and Minor Leaguers and were probably the most popular of the early tobacco-card issues. The backs of the cards contain ads for one of 16 brands of cigarettes produced by the American Tobacco Company, and the folklore surrounding the Wagner card's history has turned it into the holy grail of cards for collectors. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Museum is open from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. The Museum observes off-season hours of 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. from the day after Labor Day until Memorial Day Weekend. Ticket prices are $16.50 for adults (13 and over); $11 for seniors (65 and over) and for those holding current memberships in the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and AMVets organizations; and $6 for juniors (ages 7-12). Members are always admitted free of charge, and there is no charge for children 6 years of age or younger.
