Apple Varieties Now Available at Fly Creek Cider MillSeptember 14, 2009 - Pack-Your-Own at Fly Creek Cider Mill FLY CREEK, NY - Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard is ready for fall. We now have the following New York State apple varieties fresh from controlled atmosphere storage available in our Pack-your-own apple display room: Paula Reds- Originated by chance in a McIntosh orchard in Michigan this apple is sweet and tart. It is harvested early and is best for fresh eating and for apple sauce. Ginger Gold- Discovered by chance in 1980 in a Winesap orchard this apple is an early yellow variety that is very sweet and juicy. Exceptional for fresh eating and salads it is a possible cross of a Golden Delicious and an Albermarie Pippin. McIntosh- Discovered by John McIntosh this apple is a cross between a Fameuse and a Detroit Red Apple. Sweet and juicy with a tart tang this is New York's most popular variety. Gala- Originally from New Zealand this is a sweet early-ripening eating apple. Cross between a golden delicious and a Kid's Orange Apple it is also tasty in salads. Cortland- A New York State developed apple this is a cross between a McIntosh and a Ben Davis. Sweet flavor with a hint of tartness this apple is good for eating, salads and pies.
