Glimmerglass Film Days and The Glimmerglass Festival are co-sponsoring a screening of "The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble" on Thursday, September 15 at 6:30pm in the Alice Busch Opera Theatre.
The documentary by Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville travels the world with several of the members of The Silk Road Ensemble, an international collective of performers and composers founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma to explore how the arts can advance global understanding. In the film, Wu Man, a Grammy-nominated musician widely recognized as the world's premiere pipa virtuoso, tells how her parents encouraged her to learn music as a child as a way to escape the pressures of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. "By trying to kill the human spirit, the answer of the human spirit is to revenge with beauty," explains composer Osvaldo Golijov in the film.
Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. Doors will open at 6:00 pm. The Glimmerglass Festival's Alice Busch Opera Theater is located at 7300 State Highway 80, Cooperstown (eight miles north of the Village of Cooperstown).
